The WIPO Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources, and Traditional Knowledge was ratified in May 2024. Our panel will explore the Treaty’s implications for the future of intellectual property rights; provide an overview of Indigenous Rights, Traditional Knowledge, and Traditional Cultural Expressions; and share relevant background on the 25 years of negotiations that resulted in the Treaty’s adoption. The panel will also explore issues relating to the adoption of the Treaty, developments in connection with WIPO’s Intergovernmental Committee meetings, and how ratification of the Treaty may shift the global dialogue and national treatment of Indigenous Rights and Indigenous Peoples, including how key regions have already responded.
